Existentialism refers to a philosophical approach that takes the individual as the foundation of philosophical thought. Existentialists view human beings as radically free to alter their nature. The theory of human nature set out in "EMOTIONAL AMORAL EGOISM": A Neurophilosophical Theory of Human Nature and its Universal Security Implications by Nayef R.F. Al-Rodhan, however, suggests that human nature is the combined result of genetic heritage and the totality of an individual’s environment. In this sense, people are shaped by both nature and nurture. As such, they are not radically free to alter their nature; only partially free to shape who they are. SUSTAINABLE HISTORY AND THE DIGNITY OF MAN: A Philosophy of History and Civilisational Triumph by Nayef R.F. Al-Rodhan proposes a theory of the meaning of existence – “Sustainable Neurochemical Gratification” (SNG), which argues that life is given meaning through activities or relationships that render sustainable neurochemical gratification. This is based on the contention that human beings function according to neurochemical “events”, such as emotions, which are a large part of what drives human behavior. This approach to existence supports both the belief that individuals give their life meaning and the belief that life is given meaning by God. What generates neurochemical gratification is highly individualistic. However, in order for particular activities or relationships to bring true meaning to peoples’ lives, their positive effects must be sustainable.
